Our group of Chicago Public Schools (CPS) students arrived on Wednesday in our Nation’s capital to compete in this weekend’s US Chess High School National Championship tournament taking place at the Washington Hilton Hotel.
Before the students competed to see who this year’s national champions were, the students traveled to Baltimore to compete in a friendly match against the Baltimore Kid’s Chess League. They spent Thursday visiting some of the cultural and historic sites in DC before playing in the Thursday night Blitz chess tournament. Friday morning students got a chance to relax and play against some students from Kentucky before the start of the first round of the tournament.
The 11 schools that were selected represented a diversity of schools across the city including several Level 3 schools. 4 of the schools selected had never participated in a national Chess tournament before. The schools are Haley, Kinzie, Monroe, Decatur, Garcia HS, Jones HS, Lincoln Park HS, Payton HS, Solorio HS, Taft HS, and Englewood STEM HS.
This trip marks the 3rd year that Chicago Public Schools’ Academic Chess program has sent students to the High School National Tournament. This year the Renaissance Knights Chess Foundation, that partners with the CPS Academic Chess program, was able to secure a grant from the US Chess Federation which helped make this trip possible.
